Bristol artist & activist brings Watershed’s outdoor space to life

Watershed, Bristol’s much loved independent cinema, cultural centre and supporter of emerging talent, has commissioned a series of stunning illustrations and poem called Heart of Lightness from artist and activist Lucy J Turner to transform and bring life to their outdoor space as part of the planned opening of Undershed, their new outdoor bar by the Harbourside due to open on 19 May 2021.

The work has just been unveiled and celebrates people, togetherness and community - perfect themes for the people of Bristol as they emerge out of lockdown.

Lucy is a Bristol-based artist, digital illustrator, activist and creator who makes use of bold, bright colourful designs and shapes. Black women are her main inspiration and the focus of much of her digital art. She has used art as a way to heal from the trauma of being diagnosed with cancer at 23 and is passionate about teaching others how art can help to heal In 2020 she was voted one of the 30 most influential people in Bristol under 30.

Lucy says of Heart of Lightness, "My aim for this piece was to bring Bristol together after such a long period of separation. I wanted passers-by to feel joy, unity and hope for the future when they look at my illustrations. I use art to help heal from trauma and we know all too well the last year has been traumatic for so many of us for so many reasons but especially within the Black community. I wanted to convey the love, joyfulness and strength our communities have managed to uphold. Togetherness was a huge theme in the illustrations as I've looked forward to being together with my friends and loved ones for what has felt like an eternity"

Clare Reddington, CEO, Watershed says: “We are so excited to open Undershed and welcome you to our new harbourside space – having a presence downstairs is something we’ve been looking forward to for a while, and now is the perfect time to add outdoors space. We love the joy and the spirit of Lucy’s illustrations - which sum up what Watershed is about – being together. We hope to see you there very soon.”
