October 2018, Totnes, Devon: Dartington Hall Trust is launching their A/W contemporary arts programme of theatre, workshops, and events bringing a plethora of artistic experiences to rural Devon, nurturing a creative community that will aim to sow seeds of positive change into the hearts and minds of all that attend.
Set within the bucolic splendour of the 1,200-acre south Devon estate, Dartington Live 2018 will set out to provide an artistic space to imagine, innovate and transform. Provocative themes will include activism and radical experimentation crafted and finessed by artists of significant reputation.
Highlights include; Bedtime Stories presented by Upswing and Stratford Circus Arts, that will lull the audience into a duly receptive state for an original, dream-like acrobatic adventure in duvet-land that will inspire awe and admiration in children and adults alike.
Theatre and comedy fuse beautifully in Improbable Theatre’s production of Still No Idea where best friends Lisa and Rachael perform a deliciously raucous and mischievous exposé of good intentions gone bad.
Feminine forces unite once again in The Cause – An overture of Rebellion and Revolt, a challenging depiction of the rebellious lives and times of suffrage leader and campaigner Emmeline Pankhurst and Millicent Fawcett: marking the centenary of women winning the right to vote.
Then there’s FLIGHT, presented by award-winning immersive theatre lab DARKFIELD, a co-commission with Dartington, that will test the audience’s stress levels inside a 40ft high-cube container enveloped in absolute darkness for a full sensory air-accident experience, leaving the question “how would you cope?” hanging in the air!
Dartington Live 2018 comprises talks, makers’ workshops, music, and theatre. During its run the Dartington Estate will also be playing host to the lost weekend, Wonderland. There will be objects of desire, fire, poets, fables, music, carnival, song, street food, gin palace – and over 30 of the finest local contemporary craft makers selling unique Christmas gifts.
Outlining Dartington’s revised vision, Executive Director, Arts Amy Bere says: “The Dartington Hall Trust is investing in the Arts as inclusive, participatory, and framed by an ambitious aspiration of quality and excellence. Dartington Live 2018 does just that. Themes of change-making and learning; socially and politically engaged practice and risk-taking feature across the broad programme, encompassing music, performance art and visual art.”
